THE GREATER TRIANGLE AREA OF NORTH CAROLINA

The Research Triangle Area  refers mainly to the major cities of Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill/Cary and surrounding towns.

Certified Plus Home Inspection, serves the complete triangle area and is completely familiar with the different style homes there.

The triangle area is so unique that we have devoted over three pages of this website to that area, to share with the reader its beauty and diversity. Whether you prefer urban living or a quiet place in the country, the triangle area has it all. The following is a brief description of the major cities and towns located in the triangle area:

RALEIGH

Raleigh is the capital of North Carolina and is known as the “City of Oaks ” for its many oak trees. As of the 2006 census, Raleigh has a population of 347,729, making it one of the fastest growing cities in the nation. The Raleigh/ Durham (RDU) International airport is located off highway I-40 in Raleigh. Among its many outstanding attractions, Raleigh has many superb museums. With its rich culture and abundance of over twenty superb museums, Raleigh is called “The Smithsonian of the South.” Raleigh not only ranks high in education and culture, it also abounds with superb entertainment, sports, restaurants, shopping malls, lodgings and seasonal attractions. For more detailed information on Raleigh history. www.epodunk.com has a wealth of information about Raleigh.

DURHAM

Durham is the “City of Medicine.” It is renowned for its health research and development and is the cornerstone of the research triangle of Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill/Cary. Durham is the home to Duke University, North Carolina Central College, Durham Technical College, and North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics

Although Durham was built on a thriving tobacco industry, today the tobacco industry is gone and has been replaced with the medical industry. Durham today is know as the “The City of Medicine” because of the medical research at Duke University and the large contingency of medical practitioner  and medical researchers in the area. Durham is also a great sports city with the famous miner league baseball team the Durham Bulls, made famous by the movie that was made about the team called “Bull Durham.” Besides the Durham Bulls, Durham is known for its outstanding college teams of baseball, football, basketball, and other sports that compete on a national level.

When it comes to restaurants, shopping and entertainment, Durham is second to none. It is truly a modern city with many malls for the shopper, great restaurants with a variety of ethnic foods, and first rate hotels for the tourist. To sum up Durham in one sentence; “It is a clean, modern, thriving city with a great future.” For more detailed information on Durham history and attractions. Check out Durham on wikipedia.

CHAPEL HILL

Chapel Hill is a town located in southeast corner of Orange County in North Carolina. The Chapel Hill/Cary area  makes up one corner of the great research triangle. It is the home of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, which is the oldest state supported university in the United States.

A recent increase of about 3725 people brings the total estimated population to 52,440. Chapel Hill residents have made public education a priority, and so Chapel Hill has an excellent educational system.

The Morehead planetarium in Chapel Hill opened in 1949, and at that time was one of the few planetariums in the country. Other points of interest are: the Coker Center, the North Carolina Botanical Gardens, the Ackland Art Museum, and the Chapel Hill Museum. Chapel Hill is an avid sports town supporting basketball, baseball and football at the University of North Carolina. Chapel Hill is an upscale modern town with great restaurants entertainment and lodging. The author will end this article now with a description of Chapel Hill and Carrboro taken from the Chapel Hill Chamber of Commerce. “Chapel Hill and Carrboro have many benefits and opportunities for retirees. From the cultural, educational, recreational and medical facilities, to the mild climate and atmosphere, the area is becoming one of the most sought after locations for retirement. Just recently, Carrboro was ranked one of the top 5 places to retire by US News and World Report.

CARY

Cary is located in central North Carolina in Wake County.  It is between Raleigh and Research Triangle Park, near Jordan Lake. Cary is located in the heart of the research triangle area as its community straddles Wake and Chatham Counties. Cary’s geographic location in the triangle area is superb since by car it is: about 10 minutes from the Raleigh -Durham International airport, 15 minutes from downtown Raleigh, 20 minutes from downtown Durham, and 30 minutes from downtown Chapel Hill.

The January 2004 issue of Money magazine names Cary, NC as one of the hottest towns in the east and one of the six hottest town in America. In August 2006, Cary was again recognized by Money Magazine as one of the best small cities in America, ranking fifth on the magazine’s 2006 list of Best Places to Live.

The WakeMed Hospital is also located in Cary. The hospital is a 114 bed full service modern hospital that brings the quality care of an outstanding medical staff to all patients.

OTHER OUTSTANDING TOWNS IN THE TRIANGLE AREA

HILLSBOROUGH

The best description of Hillsborough was put forward by the Hillsborough Chamber of Commerce on their Internet site;

“Hillsborough, North Carolina was laid out in 1754 by William Churton, where the great Indian Trading Path crossed the Eno River. Then called ‘Orange,’ the town was designed on 400 acres granted by the Honorable John Earl Granville. Hillsborough took its present name in 1766. Much has changed in Hillsborough in the 250 years since its inception. But many things remain the same.

“Hillsborough is still ideally situated, at the merger of Interstate 85 and Interstate 40, providing easy access to all points in North Carolina. The town that was once the colonial capital of North Carolina is now the county seat of Orange County. During the Revolutionary War, Hillsborough was a political and cultural center in the area and it remains so today, with interesting shops and restaurants and many activities celebrating the arts and history being held monthly. Hillsborough is a nice place to visit, but it’s an even nicer place in which to live and do business. The Hillsborough Chamber of Commerce has as alot of information.

CARRBORO

Carrboro is a quaint residential town located in orange county N C. The community is named after James Carr a Mill owner . The Carrboro Chamber of Commerce said the following about Carrboro and retirees:

“Chapel Hill and Carrboro have many benefits and opportunities for retirees. From the cultural, educational, recreational and medical facilities, to the mild climate and atmosphere, the area is becoming one of the most sought after locations for retirement. Just recently, Carrboro was ranked one of the top 5 places to retire by U.S. News and World Reports.

“In 1993 the estimated population was 16,747. Carrboro is also a popular area for it’s  festivals and entertainment. Three very popular festivals  are; the buggy festival in may, Carrboro Day held usually in May, Carrboro Music festival held in September.

“Carrboro has an outstanding Farmer’s Market that this author has visited many times. The market is located at 301 Main Street, next to City Hall. The market opens April 12 and ends October 18.

The market is open two days a week, Saturdays till noon and Wednesdays from 3:30 till 6:30.

All products sold at the market are home grown and produced by the vendors. The market is well known for its great fresh fruits and vegetables and hand made products.

APEX

The following is an article taken from the apex Chamber of Commerce website which this author believes is a perfect description of Apex:

The Town of Apex, North Carolina—first settled in the 1860s and incorporated in 1873—was one of the earliest new towns to develop around the state capital of Raleigh, as railroads traversed the county after the Civil War.

“The name ‘Apex’ was adopted because the community was the highest point on the Chatham Railroad between Richmond and Jacksonville, Florida. The current town motto—‘Apex, the Peak of Good Living’ not only captures the name's historical significance, but refers to the fact that in places along the town's main street (Salem Street), water which falls on one side of the street flows to the Neuse River, and on the other side it flows to the Cape Fear River.

“The Apex downtown district reflects the town's rich historical beginning and is highlighted by the landmark 1914 Apex Union Depot. The Depot has been restored to its original glory and now houses the offices of the Apex Chamber of Commerce, a Visitors’ Center and meeting room. Visitors enjoy the rich woodwork, double fireplace, ticket windows of the stationmaster’s office, and the old switchmen’s lanterns. The building is on the National Register of Historic Places and is open weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

“A restored downtown area that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. downtown Apex features antique and specialty gift shops, as well as dining experiences that include an old-fashioned soda shop, an ice cream parlor, a fine dining bistro and more. A walking guide to the historic district is available at the Apex Chamber of Commerce office in the historic train depot.

HOLLY SPRINGS

The following information about Holly Springs was taken from the town’s website.“Nestled among Apex, Cary and Fuquay-Varina, all towns experiencing growth from the heavily populated Raleigh and RTP areas, Holly Springs is rapidly growing. The Town of less than 1,000 in 1990 grew to more than 9,000 in 2000. By 2006, the population was approximately 17,500.

“While the Town welcomes growth, leaders also are determined to control the quality and placement of new developments while preserving open space and creating public areas. One of the recent focuses has been on encouraging commercial development in downtown Holly Springs.

“We’re looking at downtown as a center for development of places that will be destination points, places that will generate traffic to draw people here,’ said Holly Springs Town Manager Carl Dean. ‘We want to make it a place where people want to come and shop.’

“Part of ensuring a successful downtown was building Town Hall in the heart of Holly Springs. On Main Street, Town Hall is a center of constant activity. Opened in 2003, the 35,000 square-foot, two-story brick building was designed in an architectural style reminiscent of the 19th century when Holly Springs was founded.

“Hardly a weekend passes without a Town-sponsored family activity in a local park or downtown, whether it’s a free movie or concert during the warmer months or a seasonal event such as the annual Easter Egg Hunt or the Happy Holly Days Parade.

Indeed, the community seems ever-occupied with providing for future generations. The Town currently has two elementary schools and one middle school. Holly Springs High School opens in 2006.

FUQUAY-VARINA

The following information was obtained from the two web site addresses given at the end of this article. For further information on Fuquay-Varina click on the web site addresses. We thank the authors of these articles for the great detailed information about Fuquay-Varina.

"Historians explain it all began back in 1663 during the reign of King Charles II of England when a charter was granted to the territory now known as the Carolinas to eight Lord's Proprietors. This vicinity of North Carolina was first known as "Piney Woods" and its first inhabitants were said to be Sippihaw Native-Americans.

"It is believed the first European to settle here was a Frenchman named William Fuquay who purchased 1,000 acres of land for 50 cents an acre. William's son, Stephen married Sarah Austin of Wake County and built his home on what is now Pine Street . One of their sons, David Crockett Fuquay, is the one for whom it is believed the town was named.

"David and his wife Louisa raised six sons in the quiet farming community then known as Sippihaw, a name taken from an Indian word meaning "good will." One of their sons, Stephen, is credited with discovery of a mineral spring on the property.

"Stephen Fuquay was the proprietor of a large plantation and one day while plowing his fields he discovered a spring. He began using it for drinking water, and soon became convinced that the mineral water had valuable healing properties. Word spread after he told his friends and neighbors and the springs developed a reputation. They were walled in on four sides leaving the front lower for drainage. A gourd was hung at the spring for everyone to use.

"Fuquay-Varina (F(y)oo-Quay Vuh-ree-nah) is a town in Wake County, N C. The population was 7,898 at the 2000 census. The town is a 30 minute drive south of Raleigh, the capitol of North Carolina. Economically, the town initially grew due to tobacco trade and agriculture, but has seen recent population growth and real estate development due to its proximity to the Research Triangle Park.

"Fuquay-Varina began as two communities: Fuquay Springs, a resort near a spring on Stephen Fuquay’s property; and Varina, a ridge near a general store founded by J.D. Ballentine. When Fuquay Springs was incorporated in 1909, the Varina community was subsumed. In 1963, the hyphen was added to acknowledge the historical presence of both settlements.  For more information on Fuquay-Varina visit wikipedia's website.

GARNER

The following information about Garner was taken from the town’s website about Garner.

"We invite you to visit us! Garner is located at the interchange of Interstate 40 and US Highway 70, approximately 8 miles south of Raleigh, the capital city of North Carolina. This community offers quick access to the Triangle's first class universities, The Research Triangle Park, Atlantic Coast Conference athletics, professional sporting events, and world renowned golfing events. Along with quick access to everything the triangle area has to offer, Garner residents can be at the beach, on the eastern coast of the state in approximately 2-3 hours. They can also travel to the mountains, in the western part of the state of North Carolina, in approximately 4-5 hours. Ask our residents what they like about Garner and you will find that many say they enjoy the small town atmosphere, that the area is less congested, and that they have all the benefits of city living, as well as, the enjoyment of many parks, recreational activities, arts and entertainment right here in their community. So, come visit Garner and find out for yourself why it's a great place to live and work!

MORRISVILLE

Wake County has experienced tremendous growth in the last few decades. In 1980, the population was only 251. The town grew to 1,489 by the 1990 Census, and 5,208 by the 2000 Census. Because of the rapid growth, a Special Census was conducted in March 2004, which counted 11,915 residents.

The median income for a household in the town was $56,548, and the median income for a family was $64,625. Males had a median income of $46,750 versus $34,528 for females. The per capita income for the town was $32,243.
