RADON GAS TESTING
BUYER BEWARE, YOU COULD BE BUYING AN EXPENSIVE HEALTH AND
ENVIRONMENTAL PROBLEM BY NOT TESTING FOR RADON
WHAT EXACTLY IS RADON? The
following is a quote from an E P A article describing radon, "Radon is a radioactive gas. It comes
from the natural decay of uranium and is found in nearly all soils. It typically moves up through the
ground to the air above and into your home through cracks and other holes in the foundation. Your home
traps radon gas inside, where it can build up. Any home may have a radon problem. This means new and old
homes, well sealed and drafty homes with or without basements." www.epa.gov/radon/pubs/citguide.html
RADON AND HOMES SALES More and more buyers
are having a radon test conducted on the home they are purchasing for a couple of very good reasons: (a)
To protect the family against Radon related health problems and (b) to protect oneself financially if
radon is discovered. HOW DANGEROUS IS RADON TO ONE'S HEALTH? The following is a report on
the health effects of exposure to indoor Radon. "The National Academy of Science ( NAS ) on
Thursday, February 19,1998, announced the findings of its Biological effects of ionizing Radiation (BEIR
) V1 Report." The health effects of exposure to indoor Radon. This report by the NSA is the most
definite accumulation of scientific data on indoor Radon. The report confirms that radon is the second
leading cause of lung cancer in the United States and that it is a serious health problem. The study
fully supports EPA estimates that Radon causes about 15,000 lung cancer deaths per year.

QUESTIONS ABOUT RADON CAN A RADON PROBLEM BE FIXED?
Yes, a radon problem can be corrected with a venting system. Today it's quite common to find a
radon venting system installed in brand new house just in case there is radon problem with the rock and
soil underneath the foundation. HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO FIX A
RADON PROBLEM? From this author experience, to install a venting system in the average
house cost between $1,500 and $2,500 dollars. Note, this is an average, there are always circumstances
and exceptions that may be more expensive to correct. DOES THE HOUSE
LOSE VALUE IF IT HAS A RADON SYSTEM INSTALLED? Radon venting systems are so common today
it appears to have little or no effect on the value of the dwelling. As a buyer, I wouldn't terminate the
purchase of a good house because it has a radon problem. However, I would want the seller to correct the
problem before closing by installing the radon venting system. OTHER
