Raleigh is the capital of North Carolina and is known as "the

Raleigh has a population of 347,729 making it one of the

HISTORY
Raleigh was selected as the site of a new state capital in
1788
Raleigh was named after Sir Walter Raleigh, who sponsored the

Raleigh grew very little from 1792 until the introduction of
street car in 1920.
The Research Triangle Park was established in the 1950's and

SCIENCE
The North Carolina Museum of Natural science is a must see
attraction. It is the southeast?s
largest natural history museum, displaying four floors of
North Carolina natural history and diversity. There are a
multitude of exhibits that capture the spirit and diversity of
Raleigh and the state of North Carolina. Two of the more
popular attractions in the museum are the live animal exhibit
and the dinosaur exhibit. There is also a large Civil War
display. The Museum is also noted for its outstanding exhibit
of great whale skeletons. The museum is located on
Bicentennial Plaza in downtown Raleigh between the Capital and
the Legislature building, at the corner of Jones and Salisbury

NORTH CAROLINA MUSEUM OF ART
The museum has a huge collection of European, Egyptian,
African, South America exhibits.
Besides Modern art and early American art, there is a great
collection of native American exhibits.
There is no admission charge and the museum is open Tuesday to

NORTH CAROLINA MUSEUM OF HISTORY
The museum is a very spacious building that was founded in
1902. It has a collection of over 150000 artifacts that covers
over six centuries of North Carolina history. The museum
focuses on, the history of the state, the states folk life,
native Indians of North Carolina, which include Cherokee,
Catawba and the coastal Algonquian. There is also a great
Civil War section and a Sports Hall of Fame. The museum also
has a very educational web site that offers a multitude of
information for both teachers and students.The museum is
